Leveraging Critical Thinking

Leveraging Critical Thinking is an 8-week online course covering topics that are important in the development of critical thinking skills including the role of self in critical thinking, logic and reasoning, analysis and communication and applying those skills problem solving; decision making and leadership.

Week 1: Elements of Critical Thinking

  • What is critical thinking?
  • Elements of thought

Week 2: The Role of Self in Critical Thinking

  • Impact of Values and Beliefs
  • Examining values, conflicts, beliefs and assumptions

Week 3: 

Logic and Reasoning

  • Examining reasoning
  • Examining errors in our thinking

How to Ask the Right Questions

  • How to ask the right questions to identify the key issue and main conclusion

Week 4: 

Analyzing Arguments

  • Analyzing Evidence
  • Analyzing and assessing research

Communication

  • Concepts of critical thinking
  • Communicating to others

Week 5: Problem Solving and Decision Making

Week 6: Communication with Teams

    • Using evidence to support communication
      • Supporting teams with critical thinking

Week 7: Critical Thinking in Healthcare

Week 8: Assessment and Leadership

    • Integrating critical thinking into assessment and leadership

Must be an RPN or other health care professional. Participants must have access to a computer, the Internet and possess basic computer skills to participate in the electronic class discussions.

Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to use critical thinking to:

  • Communicate more effectively by recognizing gaps in the communication process and knowing how to reduce misinterpretation;
  • Communicate more effectively by being able to identify the key issue, main conclusion and the intent of information being presented;
  • Analyze the reasoning process to ensure the most rational decision is made;
  • Identify and recognize how beliefs, values, learning and practices can compromise decisions;
  • Recognize the relationship between critical thinking and effective problem solving;
  • If you would like to withdraw from a course, please submit written notice prior to the date the course begins to be eligible for a refund (less a $25 administration fee).
  • Deferring a course to a later date will not incur the administration fees and the participant may select any course within one year of the initial registration date without penalty.
  • Course fees are non-refundable after 50% completion of the course duration
  • A request for a refund at any other point during the course must be submitted in writing for a partial refund (less the $25 administrative fee)
