Responsibilities

This is a permanent full time position.  Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities – days, afternoon, evening and weekend shift work may be required. Some travel is required. This position is considered a management position for the purposes of the Employment Standards Act of Ontario and as such is not covered by various ESA rules, including but not limited to those related to hours of work, daily and weekly rest periods and overtime compensation. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Director of Care is responsible for the supervision of the care of the Residents and staff of Eventide Home. Ensures the daily operations of the nursing care of the Residents are fulfilled.
  • The Director of Care supports the philosophy of the Nursing Department and of The Salvation Army Eventide Home. Actively encourages the Residents to participate in the activities of the Home.  In the absence of the Executive Director, the Director of Care assumes general overall supervision of the Home.
  • Demonstrates a keen interest in geriatrics and is capable of supervising and implementing critical thinking skills to address the nursing care needs of the Resident.
  • Supervise, motivate and train all assigned staff, ensuring effective teamwork, high standards of work quality and organizational performance, assist the with the hiring, disciplining and performance management of assigned staff.
  • Meet routinely with Nursing Program(s) designates; oversee the evaluation of all Annual Mandatory Nursing Services Programs.
  • Design, implement, monitor and evaluate the outcome of the infection control program and follows up with necessary actions.
  • Ensure efficient and effective use of supplies, equipment, staff and other resources.
  • Oversee the established system of resident reassessment of the Nursing Care Plan ensuring documentation is current, accurate and reflective of the resident plan of care and the nursing care provided through role modelling, teaching, mentoring, coaching, auditing and report generating.
  • Ensure all reports and statements required from the nursing department are prepared, accurate and available for quarterly reporting.
  • Take action to ensure resident safety, reports and conducts investigations of unsafe practices, resident abuse, or professional misconduct, documents incidents as per Facility/The college of Nurses Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.
  • Review the Nursing reports on a daily basis and provides status update to the Charge Nurse as necessary.
  • Replace staff to ensure adequate shift coverage in the absence of the scheduler as needed.
  • Assess/Provide feedback, identify educational needs for staff within the area of best practices; ensures regulatory compliance; and develops and delivers educational session to meet the standard set by the College of Nurses Ontario/Facility Policies.
  • Audit and analyze benchmark indicators in conjunction with the Continuous Quality Improvement coordinator and participates in Annual Health Quality Ontario QIP and quarterly PAC (Professional Advisory Committee) meetings.
  • Prepare reports to validate statistical information, respective committees and community boards.
  • Maintain medical records according to the professional standards of the College of Nurses Ontario
  • Communicate with Registered and Unregistered Care Providers routinely to review/adjust daily routines as necessary.
  • Ensure all communication with residents/families is carried out in a sensitive compassionate manner and adapts mode of communication to facilitate effective interaction in all activities.
  • Checks in with every unit to identify and ensure follow up on resident risk/adjust daily routines as necessary.
  • Participate in internal and external committees as assigned.
  • May provide input into and/or participate in preparing the departmental budget.

HEALTH AND  SAFETY:

  • Contribute to the development and creation of a safe work culture, leading by example in all aspects of health and safety.
  • Responsible to maintain a level of competency and understand Sections 25 and 26 of OHSA.
  • Ensure measures and procedures prescribed (OHSA) are performed and every reasonable precaution taken for protection of the worker and workplace.
  • Ensure equipment, materials and protective devises as prescribed (OHSA) are provided and maintained in good condition.
  • Participate in review of Health & Safety related accidents, injury investigations, prevention to assess/assist in design and implementation of controls and measures to reduce the potential for injury.
  • Ensure the proper procedures followed in event of a workplace injury/illness; conduct incident investigations when required.
  • Ensure that all staff is aware of emergency procedures and are prepared to implement them immediately as necessary.
  • Participate in drills to prepare for emergencies and attends all educations sessions in relation to emergency preparedness.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and departmental inspections.
  • Perform other position related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or equivalent education.
  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario and a member in good standing.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of prior related experience, including gerontology, supervisory, program planning and education delivery experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a Long Term Care residence
  • Demonstrate a keen interest in geriatrics; capable of supervise and implement to address the nursing care needs of the Residents
  • Possess effective decision-making, organizational, leadership skills
  • Knowledgeable with College of Nurses Standards of Practice
  • Knows and interprets MOHLTCA/On Reg 79/10 legislation for compliance
  • Able to act as a Resource to other programs and initiatives such as Fall/Restraints/Infection Prevention/Continence programs or other programs or projects as required.
  • Current certification in First Aid/CPR
  • Must have supervisory skills and demonstrate strong interpersonal, organizational, communication. planning, time management skills
  • Self-motivated and disciplined
  • Training and/or experience in managing projects
  • Must be able to lift/move at least 50 pounds
  • Must have excellent proficiency in WORD, email, and a computerized environment.
  • Effectively work with all managers and staff; create a working climate that is positive and mutually supportive
  • Exemplify The Salvation Army mission and principles in all dealings with other members of the management team, staff, residents, and other agencies etc.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, a personal vehicle, insurance, and a current Driver’s Abstract
  • Provide an original copy of a secured Background Check with vulnerable sector as well as through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
