Building stronger healthcare teams through the full utilization of RPN expertise.
Recent discussions about Ontario’s nursing workforce have described Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) as “less skilled” or “lesser trained.” Those descriptions do not reflect the education, expertise or professionalism of Ontario’s RPNs, nor the vital role they play in delivering safe, high-quality patient care.
Words matter. When we describe one group of healthcare professionals as “lesser”, we do more than diminish the contributions of a profession – we risk undermining public confidence in the qualified nurses providing care at the bedside.
RPNs are regulated health professionals, licensed and accountable to the College of Nurses of Ontario, held to the same professional standards as every other nurse in the province. Every nurse holds unique knowledge, experience and clinical judgment. The distinction between an RN and an RPN is not one of quality. It is one of role. RNs are educated to care for patients whose needs are complex or unpredictable. RPNs are educated to care for patients whose conditions are more stable. When care is matched to each nurse’s legislated scope, patients receive the right care from the right provider at the right time. Each designation is essential to our province’s healthcare system.
At a time of unprecedented health human resource challenges, Ontario cannot afford to underutilize any regulated healthcare professional. Optimizing RPN expertise is not about replacing one nursing designation with another—it is about strengthening healthcare teams and improving access to quality care.
To every RPN across Ontario: take pride in your profession and the difference you make every day. Your knowledge, skill and compassion strengthen healthcare teams, improve patient care and help shape the future of healthcare.
