Today, the government released further details about their plan to ensure Ontario seniors receive a minimum of four hours of direct care. This ambitious plan includes a historic investment of $1.9B annually to recruit and educate over 27,000 new PSWs, RPNs and RNs to care for LTC residents. In response to today's announcement, WeRPN issued the following statement.
COVID-19 has shown us the tireless and selfless work nurses do every day caring for Ontarians during a global pandemic. That’s why we have joined our nursing partners to celebrate the knowledge and compassion nurses deliver to people across the province through the Nursing Now Ontario Awards.
Given the alarming projected rise in hospitalizations outlined in today's modelling, and as the holiday season approaches, the association representing Ontario's hospitals and the professional associations representing the province's nurses, physicians and respiratory therapists are re-issuing our joint statement from earlier this week calling for immediate action.
As COVID-19 cases reach record highs and the pressure on our health system grows, RPNs and health colleagues are urging Ontarians to do their part and celebrate the holidays safely this year.
WeRPN continues to push for the government to take steps to ensure RPNs are fairly compensated for the important work they do.
The Ontario Government 2020 Budget outlined investments and policies to respond to the ongoing pandemic and support the government’s recovery over the coming months. In response, WeRPN has issued the following statement:
Today, the Ontario Government committed to enhancing the minimum standard of direct care for LTC residents. Read our statement.
WeRPN is pleased to see members of the Legislative Assembly support improved care for long-term care residents by voting in favour of Bill 13- A Time to Care Act on October 29th.
WeRPN CEO penned an Op-Ed in the Toronto Sun outlining why RPNs support the temporary wage increase for PSWs but feel feel this policy leaves RPNs behind and discounts the important work they also do.
The government recently announced plans to enhance wages for PSWs across Ontario. We recognize the important & difficult work that our colleagues do and believe they deserve to be compensated fairly. However, this policy has left many RPNs under-supported for the essential role that they have been playing alongside PSWs in the fight against this pandemic.
